Central Heating Systems

W

hether its a new central heating system, or a replacement for your existing heating system to a more energy efficient design, McCulloch Plumbing & Gas are here to help.

Whatever your need, it is essential that you choose the right installation company as this will be a major purchase and you do not want months of problems resulting from a poorly installed central heating system or high bills by fitting an inefficient system not best suited to your individual home.

In general there are three main types of central heating system, they all provide warmth to your home by heating radiators - the only difference being is the water pressure that the boiler operates at and the way hot water is provided.

Type of Central Heating

Combi Boiler

Combination boiler systems provide instant hot water as you need it without a watertank. These are ideal for smaller homes or places where space is at a premium such as flats., Often referred to as a ‘combi boiler’ this type of system heats hot water as you need it, without the need for a hot water storage tank. So in places where space and hot water requirements are limited, such as flats, these can be very popular systems.

The major downside of combi-boiler systems is the flow of hot water is slower than "stored hot water" systems and in general they struggle in larger homes with multiple bathrooms. To have a reasonable flow level of hot water flow the boiler the energy output has to be in a range of 25-30kW you should also consider that if you are thinking of using solar water heating in the future, most combi-systems systems are not suitable as they need a hot water cylinder.

Gravity Fed

Until recently, gravity fed central heating systems were the most popular system installed in UK housing. These are less common now and have all but been replaced by combi-boiler and high pressure systems which both offer significant advantages when a complete new system is being installed.

If cost is an issue, you may find that in many older homes with existing gravity fed systems, that it may be more cost effective to upgrade the existing gravity fed system with a new more efficient boiler rather than replace the entire system.

High Pressure

High pressure systems operates at mains water pressure and uses a stored hot water system. For large properties that use lots of hot water and require strong pressure, in general, this is the best type of system for you.

The main disadvantage is that these high performance systems tend to be more expensive than the combi systems as you have the additional expense of a hot water tank.

Aidan was quick to contact me when I asked for a quote, uninstalled my gas cooker with no hassle at all, and even hung up a bathroom cabinet for me. He was very reasonably priced and also organised an electrician to come install my new electric oven, which saved me the effort of finding someone! I'd happily hire him again.
